ACHILLES TENDONITIS
Acute injury to the Achilles Tendon is common and tends to be painful in the upper back of the heel bone.
The tendon can also be injured due to over use and is frequently seen in active people.

ANKLE SPRAINS
Ankle sprains can cause acute pain and injury,  In repeated injury, arthritic changes can lead to chronic
ankle swelling and pain.  With some many people active today, ankle sprains are common.

ATHLETE'S FEET
Athlete's feet or Tinea Pedis is a fungal skin infection.  The areas of infection may have red scaling skin
that is itchy or even sometimes tiny blisters.  It's commonly found on the bottom of the feet or in between
the toes.  The dark, moist environment of the shoe is the perfect place for the fungus to grow.

BUNIONS
Bunions are caused by a soft tissue imbalance of the big toe and the inside aspect of the foot.  This bump
can be the cause of pain, especially in tight shoes, and over time this joint can become arthritic.

CORNS AND CALLUSES
Typically corns and calluses are the result of repetitive friction of the skin with an underlying prominence
from the foot or foot deformity, such as hammertoes or bunions.

FLAT FEET
Flat feet of Pes Planus, can be present in a child or can be acquired as an adult.  Notably, the arch of the
foot is described as "falling" or pain is noted along the inside aspect of the foot.  This can be a painful
condition over time, especially at the arch of the foot, if not corrected.

FUNGAL NAILS
Fungal nails or Onychomycosis typically presents itself as thickened yellow nails with white or brown specks
in the nail.  Initially, the fungus is introduced due to injury to the nail bed.  The dark and moist
environment of the shoe is the perfect place for the fungus to grow.

Hammertoes are a curving of the toes due to muscle imbalance in the foot.  This curling of the toes can be
the root of corns and calluses of the foot, which can cause pain especially in shoes.

INGROWN NAILS
Ingrown nails or Onychocryptosis is a condition where the nail border curves downward and cuts into the
skin surrounding the nail.  This can cause intense pain to the toe with local redness, drainage, and
infection.

NEUROMAS
A neuroma is a trapped or enlarged nerve, typically between the third and fourth toes, that causes pain and
numbness to this specific area.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar fasciitis is one common cause of heel pain.  The deep aching is usually at the weight-bearing
surface of the heel and is often described as pain upon the first steps in the morning.  It is an
inflammation of the soft tissue band and arch of the foot due to a mechanical imbalance of the foot, injury,
or weight gain.

SPORTS INJURIES
There are many common foot and ankle injuries among runners and athletes.  Due to the repetitive and
high impact nature of sports, many athletes can sustain injuries that can slow them down or stop them
from participating altogether in sporting activities.

WARTS
A plantar wart or verruca is a benign lesion caused by a virus.  It has the appearance of a raised scaly
lesion that is painful, especially upon weight bearing.
